DURON was founded on the idea that a market driven approach could help address the challenge of inadequate access to electricity around the world. Duron was launched in early 2008 within Idealab, an incubator of technology companies based in Pasadena, California. John Howard, James Burgess and Ghyrn Loveness, all former classmates at Caltech, joined Idealab CEO Bill Gross, a solar energy pioneer, and Amit Shah to develop a business model that could provide affordable and reliable electricity to millions of people worldwide.

Duron's first task was to clearly understand its customer's needs. The team spent a summer observing and conducting interviews in rural homes and shops across Asia and Africa. They also consulted many organizations and experts. In addition, the team evaluated earlier attempts — some were successful, many were not. Next, the team assessed the available technologies and searched for the best match with customer needs. Solar stood out. Their first product, the DURON solar home system, was shaped by numerous revisions and field trials in rural India. The focus was always on the optimal trade-off between features and price for the customer.

The team moved its headquarters to India in early 2009, expanded the team, set up manufacturing, sales and marketing activities, and was on its way...

Duron is currently growing rapidly to meet customer demand for our products and has a number of new products in development.
